Christmas 2024
By Tony Blake
Interest rates are dropping but the world is a mess
Inflation created significant stress
The homeless are scratching to find their next meal
It all seems so hopeless– how do we deal
The red states will shout out that Biden’s to blame
The blue ones will counter that Trump’s just a game
Round and round, and fingers are pointed
It’s about time that someone be anointed.
The shootings seem endless, the carnage hard to bear
And Russia versus Ukraine just doesn’t seem fair
Where does this end, inexplicable shame?
There is no winner to this murderous game.
The COVID, the flu, and now RSV
Vaccines and boosters just aren’t the key
The climate is warming, rivers run dry
Oceans keep rising, the weather’s awry
But each time this year brings a season of hope
That somehow humanity finds a way it will cope
There is good in this world, sometimes hard to see
I know it is there, I feel it in me
Reach out to help others and give them a hand
Be positive and gracious—united we stand
The pendulum has swung too far to one side
We are all getting weary of this tumultuous ride
Donate your time, your efforts, your soul
Together we can make a diminishing hole
It won’t happen quickly, but pay it ahead
Think of the goodwill that will continue to spread
The nurses, the doctors, the teachers out there
For the welfare of others that is their care
The police, mental health workers, and so many more
Dedicate their lives—it’s part of their core
Let’s all take a moment and open our minds
The options are endless—there are so many kinds
Of ways the pendulum swings back to the middle
The effort can be simple, it takes just a little
Say hi to some strangers, and give them a smile
That simple greeting can last a long while
Pick up some litter you see on the street
Give an elderly person an occupied seat
Say thanks to the postman who delivers your mail
Give hugs to old friends, the love will prevail
Do unto others, the golden rule states
Wash away discord and all of the hates
We can all make a difference—It’s little things, true
But collectively we’ll get there—I promise to you
It may take a long while, before we see change
It’s a task we must manage, it’s time to engage
The bar is set high but not out of reach
For each of us here and others to teach
Let’s follow this lead—it’s there for a reason
And make Christmas last for more than one season
Peace on Earth
